Navaid Equipment

The NavaidEquipment class is specialised into: Azimuth, DME, DirectionFinder, Elevation, Glidepath, Localizer, MarkerBeacon, NDB, SDF, TACAN and VOR.

The specific coding guidelines for each of the specialised classes are described in the following pages.

Ā NavaidEquipment may be used for more than one Navaid, e.g. a Navaid with type equal-to 'NDB' will be composed of a NavaidEquipment that is an NDB feature. The same NDB may be used as component for a Navaid with type equal-to 'ILS'.

Note

The Navaid feature can be used as SignificantPoint (see also topic SignificantPoint (Overview)), whereas a navaid equipment (e.g. VOR feature) can not. Hence, if a particular navaid equipment of a navaid shall be available as its own SignificantPoint it has to be encoded as separate Navaid feature.

The following figures illustrate such situations:

The first case shows a simple example of a VORTAC. The VORTAC will be encoded as a Navaid feature referencing two navaid equipments, a VOR and a TACAN feature.

However, in case there is a need to use only the TACAN and/or the VOR as SignificantPoint, the corresponding navaid equipment of the VORTAC as the coded as separate Navaid feature.

For example; the TACAN may also be used military routes (without the VOR). The VOR and the TACAN are not at the same location, but for the VORTAC Navaid feature the VOR location is coded.

The second case shows a Navaid of type ILS which is composed of five navaid equipment features. A Localizer, a Glidepath, a NDB (locator collocated with the outer marker) and two MarkerBeacons, one of it an outer marker and the other one a middle marker.

All these navaid equipments might also be used for other purposes than being part of the ILS.

For example, the NDB may also be used as SegmentPoint for a terminal procedure. In this case the NDB has to be available as SignificantPoint. Hence, the NDB has to be encoded as separate Navaid feature referencing as navaid equipment the NDB feature.

Also the outer marker coded as MarkerBeacon may separately be coded as "own" Navaid feature.

Finally, if needed also the NDB Marker collocation may be coded as separate Navaid feature referencing as navaid equipment the MarkerBeacon and NDB feature which are also referenced by the ILS.
