Candidates for service category schemes

Potential service categoryNotes

PANS-IM, ICAO information domains

This looks similar to https://reference.swim.aero/information-services/service-categories/CodeRegulatedInformationExchangeType.html but is different in purpose and in geographical applicability.

Service CategoryValueDefinition
CodeICAOInformationDomainType
A categorisation of the ICAO information domains used in ICAO PANS-IM Service Overview.

Flight information

(FLIGHT_INFORMATION)

Information useful for the safe and efficient conduct of flight, including information on air traffic, meteorological conditions, aerodrome conditions or air route facilities. (ICAO)

Aeronautical information

(AERONAUTICAL_INFORMATION)

Information resulting from the assembly, analysis and formatting of aeronautical data. (ICAO)

Meteorological information

(METEOROLOGICAL_INFORMATION)

Meteorological report, analysis, forecast, and any other statement relating to existing or expected meteorological conditions. (ICAO)

Environment information

(ENVIRONMENT_INFORMATION)

Capacity, demand and flow information

(CAPACITY_DEMAND_AND_FLOW_INFORMATION)

Surveillance information

(SURVEILLANCE_INFORMATION)

Other information

(OTHER INFORMATION)

AIRM subjects (the packages within the AIRM also have URIs

This was raised in the context of datasets but is applicable to information service payloads in general and, e.g. tools like semantic NOTAM in particular. At the moment the packages are not published but should be. An AIRM change request has been raised.

3PANS-IM, ICAO validation methods

For use in e.g. service overviews.

Service CategoryValueDefinition
validation
An activity whereby a service is checked for conformance with the service objectives and requirements. Note: The service objectives and requirements are captured in the service overview and the technical specifications. (SWIM Glossary)

Independent validation

A validation of service carried out by an independent authority. (SWIM Glossary)

Collaborative validation

A validation of service jointly carried out by the service provider together with service users. (SWIM Glossary)

User validation

A validation of service carried out by service users. (SWIM Glossary)

Self validationA validation of service carried out by the service provider. (SWIM Glossary)
4PANS-IM, ICAO quality of service

For use in e.g. service overviews.

Service CategoryValueDefinition
quality of service
The degree or level of confidence that the performance of a service meets users requirements. (SWIM Glossary)

Availability

The degree to which a service is operational and accessible when required for use. (SWIM Glossary)

Capacity

The maximum rate at which a service can process transactions and the maximum message size of responses. Note: Measurements can include the number of items that can be stored, the number of concurrent users, the communication bandwidth, throughput of transactions, and size of messages. (SWIM Glossary)

Time behaviour

A measurement of the processing times of a service. Note: This parameter may be expressed as an indication of a maximum time needed for the service provider to complete the request, measured from the time instant the service provider receives the request to the time instant the service provider sends the response or makes it available. (SWIM Glossary)

RecoverabilityThe degree to which, in the event of an interruption or a failure, the desired state of the service can be re-established. (SWIM Glossary)

ConfidentialityThe degree to which a service ensures that data are accessible only to those authorized to have access. (SWIM Glossary)

IntegrityAn expression of the assurance that a system, product or component prevents unauthorized access to, or modification of, an information service interface or information. (SWIM Glossary)

Tasks

TaskStatusNotes
1

SWIM-SERV-009 will be updated to allow more flexible service categorisation.

In progressUpdate has been discussed and proposal written
2

A set of service categorisation schemes will be hosted on https://reference.swim.aero/index.html.

CompletedUsing https://reference.swim.aero/information-services/service-categories.html
3

These schemes can then be used in a service description, service definition or service overview.

Document their use in the corresponding supporting material4

The schemes will be published in HTML format with a URL/URI.

Completed
54

We will also look to publish the schemes in an ontology language such as RDF.

In progressExample shown in 2021-03-29-SSCONE-SITCOM meeting and accepted as way forward.
5

We will write a "knowledge article" for the swim reference website. It will cover

  • what they are,
  • how to use them - These schemes can then be used in a service description, service definition or service overview.
  • and why - show the application of the categories.

It should also make it clear that they categorisation schemes are separate from e.g. governance and compliance processes. It will explain how to use other sources of categorisation schemes e.g. semantics.aero

6

The schemes will be evolved using SSCONE as the discussion forum.

7

ensure the MEP documents can use the categories. See https://reference.swim.aero/resources.html

8

some values in different categories need to be logically explained

e.g. can you have a PROSPECTIVE SERVICE_DEFINITION or not? A matrix showing these sorts of business rules would be good to have.
