Due to the extent of the AIXM 5 diagrams, the mapping of the PANS-AIM "Aerodrome/Heliport" subject is divided into several parts.

The first part contains the basic mapping, i.e. those properties that are listed in PANS-AIM Chapter 5.3.3.1 "AIP data set" and are hence considered as the minimum data set to be provided. These are

f) Aerodrome/Heliport (location indicator, name, designator IATA, served city, certified ICAO, certification date, certification expiration date, control type, field elevation, reference temperature, magnetic variation, airport reference point);

The other parts contain the mapping for the additional data items identified to be required for the AIP data set.

Basic mapping

The properties of the Aerodrome / Heliport subject listed in PANS-AIM are mapped to the following main AIXM 5 feature:

PANS-AIMDescription (PANS-AIM)AIXM 5Remarks
Designator - ICAO location indicator

The four letter ICAO location indicator of the aerodrome/heliport, as listed in ICAO DOC 7910 (Location Indicators).

Note: if any

AirportHeliport.locationIndicatorICAO,

AirportHeliport.designator

PANS-AIM issue

In PANS-AIM chapter 5.3.3.1.1 the term "location indicator" is used. In Appendix 1 the term "ICAO location indicator" is used.

Designator - Designator IATA

The identifier that is assigned to a location in accordance with rules (resolution 767) governed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Note: if any

AirportHeliport.designatorIATA,

AirportHeliport.designator

Designator - OtherA locally defined airport identifier, if other than an ICAO Location IndicatorAirportHeliport.designatorAlthough this is an optional property, it is mapped for the sake of data completeness.
NameThe primary official name of an aerodrome as designated by an appropriate authority.AirportHeliport.name
Served cityThe full name ( free text) of the city or town the aerodrome/heliport is serving.AirportHeliport.servedCity.City.name
Control typeIndication if an aerodrome is under civil control, military control or joint controlAirportHeliport.controlType
Certified ICAOIndication if airport is/is not certified according to the ICAO rulesAirportHeliport.certifiedICAO
Certification dateThe date when the airport certification has been issued by the supervising authority.AirportHeliport.certificationDate
Certification experation dateThe date when the airport certification will become invalid.AirportHeliport.certificationExpirationDate
Field elevation - ElevationThe vertical distance above Mean Sea Level (MSL) of the highest point of the landing area.

Field elevation - Geoid undulation

Geoid undulation at the aerodrome/ heliport elevation position

Note: where appropriate

AIXM 5.1(.1) issue

In AIXM 5.1.(1) the geoidUndulation can only be provided for the ARP (i.e ElevatedPoint), which may not be the highest point of the landing area.

An annotation for the property fieldElevation of the AirportHeliport may be used to encode that information including the accuracy of the Geoid Undulation.

Reference temperatureThe monthly mean of the daily maximum temperatures for the hottest month of the year at an aerodrome. This temperature should be averaged over a period of years. (ICAO recommendation)AirportHeliport.referenceTemperature
Magnetic variation - Angle

The angular difference between True North and Magnetic North.

The magnetic variation angle value

AirportHeliport.magneticVariation

AIXM 5.1.1 issue

PANS-AIM requires an Accuracy for the Magnetic variation - Angle. AIXM 5.1.1 does not provide a dedicated attribute. Note may be used to code that information.
Magnetic variation - DateThe date on which the magnetic variation had the corresponding value.AirportHeliport.dateMagneticVariation
Magnetic variation - Annual changeThe annual rate of change of the magnetic variation.AirportHeliport.magneticVariationChange
Airport reference point - Position

The designated geographical location of an aerodrome.

Geographical location of aerodrome reference point.

PANS-AIM naming issue

In PANS-AIM chapter 5.3.3.1.1 the term "airport reference point" is used. In Appendix 1 the term "reference point" is used.

Airport reference point - SiteThe location of the reference point on the aerodrome. AirportHeliport.annotation.Note.propertyName equal-to 'ARP' .translatedNote.LinguisticNote.note

AIXM issue

There is no dedicated attribute in AIXM 5.1.1 to encode that information. An annotation to the ARP property of AirportHeliport feature may be used.

Airport reference point - DirectionDirection of aerodrome reference point from centre of the city or town which the aerodrome servesAirportHeliport.annotation.Note.propertyName equal-to ''ARP' .translatedNote.LinguisticNote.note

AIXM issue

There is no dedicated attribute in AIXM 5.1.1 to encode that information. An annotation to the ARP property of AirportHeliport feature may be used.

Airport reference point - DistanceDistance of aerodrome reference point from centre of the city or town which the aerodrome servesAirportHeliport.annotation.Note.propertyName equal-to 'ARP' .translatedNote.LinguisticNote.note

AIXM issue

There is no dedicated attribute in AIXM 5.1.1 to encode that information. An annotation to the ARP property of AirportHeliport feature may be used.

Additional mapping (Type of Traffic Permitted)

The Type of Traffic permitted as defined in the PANS-AIM is covered in AIXM by the AirportHeliportAvailability and its related objects.

PANS-AIMDescription (PANS-AIM)AIXM 5Remarks
Type of Traffic Permitted - IFR/VFRIndication if IFR and/or VFR flights are permitted at the aerodrome/heliport

AirportHeliport.availability.AirportHeliportAvailability.usage.AirportHeliportUsage

.selection.ConditionCombination.flight.FlightCharacteristic.rule

The ARINC 424 Airport Record (PA) contains a field named "IFR Capability".

The IFR Capability field indicates if the Airport/Heliport has any published Instrument Approach Procedures (IAP).

The assumption is made that for an AirportHeliport IFR traffic is permitted also IAP are published. If no IFR procedure is published it is considered to be a VFR airport.
