This page contains the mapping for the following data items as defined in PANS-AIM, chapter 5.3.3.1.1

i) FATO (designation, length, width, threshold point);

These properties, which are considered as minimum for the AIP data set are mapped to the following main AIXM 5 features:

Note:

In AIXM 5, the Runway and its associated classes are used to encode both Runway and FATO. The Runway.type attribute is used to define if the record is an instance of a Runway or a FATO.

Hence, a FATO has to be encoded as Runway with type equal-to ‘FATO’.

PANS-AIMDescription (PANS-AIM)AIXM 5Definition (AIXM 5.1.1)Remarks
Threshold pointThe beginning of that portion of the FATO usable for landing.

RunwayCentrelinePoint.role equal-to 'THR'

RunwayCentrelinePoint: An operationally significant position on the centre line of a runway direction. A typical example is the runway threshold.

role: The role of an operationally significant position on the centre line of a runway direction.

Threshold point - PositionGeographical location of FATO threshold point

RunwayCentrelinePoint.location.ElevatedPoint

and

RunwayCentrelinePoint.location.ElevatedPoint.horizontalAccuracy

location: Geographical position of the runway centreline point.

horizontalAccuracy: The difference between the recorded horizontal coordinates of a point and its true position referenced to the same geodetic datum expressed as a circular error at 95 percent probability.

Threshold point - ElevationElevation of the FATO threshold

RunwayCentrelinePoint.location.ElevatedPoint.elevation

and

RunwayCentrelinePoint.location.ElevatedPoint.verticalAccuracy

elevation: The vertical distance of the point measured from Mean Sea Level (MSL).

verticalAccuracy: The difference between the recorded elevation of a point and its true elevation referenced to the same vertical datum expressed as a linear error at 95 percent probability.

The verticalAccurracy encoded refers to both the elevation and the geoidUndulation.
Threshold point - Geoid undulationWGS-84 Geoid undulation at FATO threshold position

RunwayCentrelinePoint.location.ElevatedPoint.geoidUndulation

and

RunwayCentrelinePoint..location.ElevatedPoint.verticalAccuracy

geoidUndulation: The distance of the geoid above (positive) or below (negative) the mathematical reference ellipsoid at the location of the point.

According to ICAO Annex 14, Volume II

...geoid undulation of each threshold of the FATO (where appropriate) shall be measured and reported to the aeronautical information services authority....

Info for accuracy

In AIXM 5 the verticalAccuracy refers to both the elevation and the geoidUndulation.

Hence, if the verticalAccuracy is coded for the elevation but the accuracy for the Geoid undulation is not known, this should be put into a corresponding Note.

DesignationThe full textual designator of the landing and take-off area.

Runway.designator

LengthThe longitudinal extent of FATO

Runway.nominalLength

Runway.lengthAccuracy

WidthThe transversal extent of FATORunway.nominalWidth

AIXM 5 provides a Runway.widthAccuracy attribute. But accuracy is not specified for the width of a FATO in PANS-AIM. (For "TLOF width" and "Runway width" PANS-AIM defines an accuracy.)
