Glossary

This glossary reuses terms available on the SWIM reference glossary as well as adding terms that are found on these pages.

Term	Definition
backdrop map	A 'dumb' map or image whose primary use is to provide context visually. It contains no other intelligence or attribution other than what is needed to provide the background.
data product specification	Detailed description of a data set or data set series together with additional information that will enable it to be created, supplied to and used by another party (ISO 19131).
data set	Identifiable collection of data (ISO 19101).
data set provider	The organisation that publishes the data set.
data set series	Collection of data sets sharing the same product specification (ISO 19115).
data set store	The store of published data sets and data set series.
data set user	The organisation that uses the data set.
feature	Abstraction of real world phenomena (ISO 19101).
layer	Basic unit of geographic information that may be requested as a map from a server.
service definition	A document, issued by a community of interest, used to harmonize service implementations.
