c) ATS Route and Other Route

c) ATS Route and Other Route

Introduction & Background

Minimum Data Items

This page contains the mapping for the following data items as defined in PANS-AIM, chapter 5.3.3.1.1

c) ATS route and other route (designator, flight rules)

These properties, which are considered as minimum AIP data set for Route, are mapped to the following main AIXM 5 feature:

PANS-AIMDescription (PANS-AIM)AIXM 5Definition (AIXM 5.1.1)Remarks

Designator (ATS Route),

Designator (Other Route)

Designators for ATS routes according to Annex 11 Appendix 1 (or Appendix 3 for standard departure and arrival routes)

Route.designatorPrefix

and/or

(

Route.designatorSecondLetter

and

Route.designatorNumber

)

RouteSegment.designatorSuffix

and/or

Route.multipleIdentifier

Route: A specified route designed for channelling the flow of traffic as necessary for the provision of air traffic services, from the end of the take-off and initial climb phase to the commencement of the approach and landing phase.

designatorPrefix:A prefix for the route designator, indicating whether the route is upper ATS, reserved for helicopters or reserved for supersonic flights.

designatorSecondLetter: The letter of the route designator. Depending on the region, letters may have special significance with regard to the route usage limitations.

designatorNumber: The number of the route designator.

multipleIdentifer: A suffix for the route designator, indicating alternates for homonymous routes (especially for military training routes).

designatorSuffix: A suffix for the route designator (according ICAO Annex 11), indicating whether advisory service only is available on that portion, or the RNP status of the route portion.

The RouteSegment.designatorSuffix has been added, as in some countries a route may have a different designator suffix for particular route segments.

Flight rulesInformation on the flight rules that apply on the route (IFR / VFR)Route.flightRuleflightRoule: A code indicating the flight rules to be observed by aircraft. For example, VFR and/or IFR.

Acc. to PANS-AIM only relevant for "Other routes".

It is probably assumed that ATS routes are for IFR and "other routes" include both IFR and VFR routes.

ATS Routes,

Other Route

Route.type value equal-to 'ATS'

Route.type value equal-to 'OTHER:'

type: Route classification.

Although in PANS-AIM type it is only an optional property for Other Route, it is considered reasonable to code the type also for ATS Routes with the corresponding value.

In case of 'OTHER'  details should be provided about the route type (e.g. 'OTHER:VFR').

For the composition of the route designator, PANS-AIMS requires one property for the route designator.

In contrast, AIXM 5.1.(1) provides four different attributes to compose the complete route designator.

Example:

  • designatorPrefix equal-to 'U', to indicate that the route or portion thereof is established in the upper airspace;
  • designatorSecondLetter equal-to 'L'
  • designatorNumber equal-to '601'
  • RouteSegment.designatorSuffix equal-to 'F', to indicate that on the route or portion thereof advisory service only is provided
