g) Runway

Introduction & Background

Minimum Data Items

This page contains the mapping for the following data items as defined in PANS-AIM, chapter 5.3.3.1.1

g) Runway (designator, nominal length, nominal width, surface type, strength);

Optional Data Items

The other parts contain the mapping for the additional data items that may be required for the AIP data set of specific interest.

Basic mapping

These properties, which are considered as minimum for the AIP data set are mapped to the following main AIXM 5 features:

Note:

In AIXM 5, the Runway and its associated classes are used to encode both Runway and FATO. The Runway.type attribute is used to define if the record is an instance of a Runway or a FATO.

Hence, a Runway has to be encoded as Runway with type equal-to ‘RWY’.

AIXM 5.2 Improvements

A change proposal (AIXM-398) for the next AIXM 5.2 version has been approved by the AIXM Change Control Board, through which two new attributes are added to the Runway feature to designate the Aerodrome Reference Code, as specified in the ICAO Annex 14, Volume 1, item 1.6. At the same time, the coded values in the CodeAircraftWingspanClassBaseType are aligned with the ICAO terminology (A, B, ..F instead of I, II, ...VI).

The coding guidelines provided here are aligned with forward/backward conversion rules contained in the AIXM-398 Change Proposal.

PANS-AIMDescription (PANS-AIM)AIXM 5Definition (AIXM 5.1.1)Remarks
DesignatorThe full textual designator of the runway, used to uniquely identify it at an aerodrome/heliport. E.g. 09/27, 02R/20L, RWY 1.Runway.designator

Runway: A defined rectangular area on a land aerodrome/heliport prepared for the landing and take-off of aircraft. Note: this includes the concept of Final Approach and Take-Off Area (FATO) for helicopters.

designator: The designator of a runway, used to uniquely identify it at an aerodrome/heliport.

Nominal lengthThe declared longitudinal extent of the runway for operational (performance) calculations.

Runway.nominalLength

and

Runway.lengthAccuracy

nominalLength: The declared longitudinal extent of the runway for operational (performance) calculations.

lengthAccuracy: Accuracy of the value of the physical length of the runway.

Nominal widthThe declared transversal extent of the runway for operational (performance) calculations.

Runway.nominalWidth

and

Runway.widthAccuracy

nominalWidth: The declared transversal extent of the runway for operational (performance) calculations.

widthAccuracy: Accuracy of the value of the physical width of the runway.

Info

PANS-AIM defines an accuracy for the Runway width but not for the FATO width.

Surface typeThe surface type of the runway defined as specified in Annex 14 Volume I

Runway.surfaceProperties.

SurfaceCharacteristics.composition

surfaceProperties: Surface characteristics of the runway.

composition: The type of the predominant material of which a surface of the movement area is composed.

Strength - PCNPavement classification number

Runway.surfaceProperties.

SurfaceCharacteristic.classPCN

classPCN: The bearing strength of a pavement for unrestricted operations.
Strength - Pavement typePavement type for aircraft classification number — pavement classification number (ACN-PCN) determination

Runway.surfaceProperties.

SurfaceCharacteristics.pavementTypePCN

pavementTypePCN: The pavement behaviour (rigid or flexible) used for determining the Pavement Classification Number (PCN).
Strength - Subgrade categorySubgrade strength category

Runway.surfaceProperties.

SurfaceCharacteristics.pavementSubgradePCN

pavementSubgradePCN: An indication of the pavement subgrade strength related to the Pavement Classification Number (PCN).
Strength - Allowable pressureMaximum allowable tire pressure category or maximum allowable tire pressure value

Runway.surfaceProperties.

SurfaceCharacteristics.maxTyrePressurePCN

maxTyrePressurePCN: The maximum allowable tire pressure category related to the Pavement Classification Number (PCN), as a category.

evaluationMethodPCN: The method used to rate a runway pavement.

Additional mapping (Shoulder width)

PANS-AIMDescription (PANS-AIM)AIXM 5Definition (AIXM 5.1.1)Remarks
Shoulder - WidthThe width of the runway shoulderRunway.widthShoulderThe runway shoulder width.Required for A380 operations.
